Root Spray for Gray Hair: How It Works, How to Apply It and When Powder Is Better
Short answer: A root spray is temporary color in an aerosol. It coats the gray at your roots and part and washes out with your next shampoo. L'Oréal Paris says its Magic Root Cover Up dries in one minute and lasts until your next shampoo, and lists it in 9 shades. Clairol lists its Temporary Gray & Root Concealer Spray in Black, Dark Brown, Medium Brown, Light Brown, Dark to Medium Blonde and Auburn Red. A spray is fastest on a wide area like the part or crown. For the hairline, temples and fine partings, a powder gives more control.

How a root spray works
The pigment sits on the outside of the hair. There is no mixing, no developer and no processing time, so nothing changes inside the hair, and it washes out. L'Oréal Paris describes Magic Root Cover Up as ammonia-free and peroxide-free.

How to apply it without overspray
- Start with dry, styled hair. Spray is the last step, not the first.
- Shake the can well.
- Hold your free hand or a tissue along the hairline to shield your forehead.
- Spray in short, light passes at the distance on the can. L'Oréal Paris says 4 to 6 inches.
- Build in layers instead of one heavy coat.
- Let it dry fully before you touch or comb it. L'Oréal Paris says one minute.
When a powder works better
- The hairline and temples, where spray drifts onto skin.
- A fine part, where you want color only on the line.
- Travel, if you would rather not pack an aerosol.
- Quick fixes during the day, with a compact in your bag.

Picking the shade
Match the color right at your roots in daylight, not your ends, which are often lighter or faded. If you are between two shades of brown, the darker one usually hides more gray. On blonde or light hair, a lighter shade looks softer.
